LadyCats Take Perrin Lady Pirates in Four!
25-15, 25-20, 25-27, and 25-20
September 28, 2011
The Newcastle LadyCats took a giant step last night in district play by beating the Perrin Lady Pirates 25-15, 25-20, 25-27, and 25-20 on their home court. Each game was back and forth with momentum changes the norm rather than the exception. But, it was the LadyCats scrappy team play that made the difference in this one. They played with total commitment that the volleyball was not going to touch the floor on their side of the net.
The first game was highlighted by some great net play with all of the LadyCats making blocks on the tough Lady Pirates hitters. This dominance at the net and Amy Clayborn’s fireball serves put the Lady Pirates in a hole they just couldn’t dig out. Looked pretty easy with a 25-15 win in game one.

Amy digs one off the floor while Courtney and Charitye get into position vs PerrinGame two took a little different look. The Lady Pirates and their strong hitter, Hutton, came back in game two and took an early six point lead at 5-11 when the LadyCats decided they need to play a little harder. Charitye Lowe’s consistent serves provided the kick start for a seven point run that gave the lead back to the LadyCats at 12-11. That LadyCat run shifted the momentum and the LadyCats went on to win game two by a 25-20 score.
In game three the LadyCats seemed to relax and let down their guard and the Lady Pirates built up another big lead but here came the LadyCats back and tied things up at about the 18-18 mark. From then on it was back and forth, back and forth. The LadyCats had chances to put it away and sweep the match but the “serving” gods were not kind to the LadyCats and every serve seemed to go long or find the net. LadyCats ended up on the losing end of an exciting 25-27 game.
It appeared that the momentum had swung back to the Lady Pirates but here is where the scrappy LadyCats refused to lose! They were on the floor; they were out of bounds; they were in the benches going for loose balls. It had to be frustrating for the Lady Pirates to set Hutton time and time again, only to have the LadyCats dig it off the floor, get a fist on it, keep the ball up into the air, just waiting for one of their teammates to get a good shot back at them! Quite a game with the LadyCats prevailing by a 25-20 score!
The LadyCats play this Saturday morning at 10:00 in Bryson against another Cowgirl team. The Cowgirls always have a good volleyball team and this promises to be a very crucial match on the LadyCats road to a district crown.
