Newcastle OAP Shines!

“I know why we did it, Joe. I know now. Because even if we lose--we’ve already won. Because for the first time in our lives--we’ve seen the stars!” (Anya Rosen, “To See The Stars”). In 1909, a group of women took up the battle cry of “Justice!” “Fairness!” and led a strike in New York City for better working conditions and fairer pay. This strike ended in success in 1910. The strike helped bring about better working conditions and fairer pay not only for women working in the garment industry, but also for men who worked in the garment industry.
The directors, cast and crew of this year’s one act play, “To See The Stars” by Cynthia Mercati, successfully took on the challenge of bringing this story to life. Directors were Kem Duckworth Forbus and Meghan Clark.
At district competition Emma Ray received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, and Heather Manos and Grady Shields received All-Star Cast.
At bi-district competition the play was ranked first place. Kelsey Shields received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast; Heather Shields and Emma Ray received All-Star Cast, and Grady Shields received Best Actor.
Area competition marked the end for this year’s journey. The cast and crew left it all on the boards, telling a beautiful story. Emma Ray and Grady Shields received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, and Heather Manos received All-Star Cast.
We say goodbye to eight seniors this year who brought great talent and energy to the group. Although they will be missed, they leave behind an equally talented and energetic group of underclassmen. We look forward to another successful season next year.
