Bobcats End Playoff Run with Close Loss to Strawn

Bobcats 42 - Greyhounds 52

December 06, 2012

The Newcastle Bobcats fought valiantly until the bitter end Friday night in Cisco as the Strawn Greyhounds narrowly escaped with a 52-42 victory.  The Greyhounds will play the Richland Springs Coyotes in the state semifinal game in Hico this Saturday.

As most know, Strawn beat the Bobcats by 46 points earlier in the season during week five by a score of 54-8.  The game ended early due to the 45 point mercy rule in 6-man football and most predicted another early end to this playoff game as well.  But, Coaches Spitzer, Wilkinson and Eli, had something a little different in mind – a little payback for that embarrassing loss in Strawn!  All week long the Bobcats worked hard in preparation for the Greyhounds and put in a few new wrinkles that might not be expected.  Regretfully for the Bobcats, the unexpected thing that happened was an early first quarter re-injury to Bobcat Tyler Mays’ right shoulder!  That injury took a lot of wind out of the Bobcats’ sail for at least one possession and it seemed like everything they did was wrong and the offense was going backward!!

Anyone who has watched this 2012 version of the Newcastle Bobcats know that this bunch is tough and they will not quit – and they didn’t!  After two scores by the Greyhounds and a 16-0 lead, the Bobcats - behind the arm of quarterback, Ryan Hardin; the arm and legs of spreadback, Michael Moreno, and the sticky fingers of center, Nathan Wilson – the Bobcats came roaring back with a score at the 1:15 mark in the second quarter and then recovered an on-side kick with a chance to cut into the 10 point lead before the half was even over!  That drive died on a fourth and goal from the two yard line and the Bobcats trailed the Greyhounds by 10 at halftime!

Believe me, this game was a solid team effort for the Bobcats and the offense came roaring out of the half and immediately scored on a 38 yard pass from Moreno to Nathan Wilson and with Nic Martin’s extra point kick moved the Bobcats to a slight two point deficit – 14-16!  20 seconds later the Greyhounds came roaring back with a 50 yard touchdown run by Jacob Trujillo and then 2 minutes later they scored again on a 35 yard scamper by Bobby Wells giving the Greyhounds their largest lead at 14-30.

It would have been very easy for the Bobcats to simply whimper and die at that time but they didn’t!  They kept fighting and once again Michael Moreno found Nathan Wilson open for a 13 yard touchdown pass and once again Nick Martin’s kick moved the Bobcat deficit to a single score 22-30.  Strawn was moving the ball again until Preston Hobbs stepped in front of an errant Hounds pass; tipped it into the air not once, not twice but three times; and then took off down the Bobcats’ sideline for a 35 yard pass interception touchdown!  Regretfully, Nik Martin’s kick was wide and that left the Bobcats 2 measly points behind!!  The comeback was in full throttle!

27 seconds later the potent Strawn offense scored again on a 19 yard Bobby Wells touchdown run.  Hernandez kick put the Hounds back up by 10 points – 28-38.  From that point forward it was back and forth; back and forth.  The Bobcats came back and scored on a 17 yard Michael Moreno run and then the Greyhounds scored on a 4 yard Ross Alison run.  With 1:53 remaining Michael Moreno scored again to move the Bobcats within a single score at 42-46.  The Bobcats were forced to try another on-side kick because, unfortunately, they were now out of time outs and the only way they could get the ball back was via an onside kick!  The kick did not travel the full 15 yards needed to recover so the Greyhounds took over near the 40 yard line.  All the Greyhounds needed was a first down to end the game but I guess they didn’t want to take any chances so they felt it necessary to score one last touchdown.  I really don’t blame them since this game was so different from the first meeting of these two teams!  The Bobcats had improved tremendously over the past few weeks and the Greyhounds wanted to end this game as soon as possible!  There is no doubt without the injury to Tyler Mays’ shoulder, this game would have had a totally different outcome and the Bobcats would be preparing for a return match with Richland Springs!

Regardless of the outcome, we wish Coach Lee, his coaches and the Greyhounds the best of luck with Richland Springs!  While the Greyhounds are preparing for this Saturday’s game in Hico, the Bobcats are regrouping and preparing for next year!  We sure hate to lose Michael, Preston, J.W. and Golden Toe, Nik Martin, but the younger Bobcats have grown a ton this year and now we have a strong nucleus of juniors (next year’s seniors) to build around – Tyler, Nathan, Sean, Hunter, and Will.  From now till the beginning of two-a-days it will be their job to provide the leadership necessary to encourage these younger guys to put in the work necessary to become champions!  They have seen it done and they can do it again!  I look forward to being part of the next Bobcat district champion and seeing how far these Bobcats can take us!  It should be an exciting trip!
