Bobcats Win Area Trophy Over the Unbeaten Aspermont Hornets!
Regional Playoff Game vs Strawn - Friday, Nov. 30th, 7:30 in Cisco
November 26, 2012
Friday night’s “Area” playoff game in Throckmorton was one for the ages! It was hard fought on both sides of the ball by both teams! Sixth ranked Aspermont was a very good 11-0 team; however, on this night the un-ranked, 7-4 Bobcats were better!! At the beginning of the football season Coach Spitzer told this group of boys that they would encounter some early challenges, but those challenges would only make them stronger! The Bobcats proved him correct with an upset 50-38 area championship!
Aspermont got off to a quick start with a 6 yard touchdown scamper by their outstanding running back, Ryan Reid. Less than two minutes later at the 5:29 mark of the first quarter Tyler Mays connected with Michael Moreno on a 51 yard pass and took a 2 point lead with Mays’ successful extra point kick. Before the first quarter was over the Bobcats extended the lead to 16-6 when Moreno scored on his shortest run of the night – a 4 yard touchdown run!
The second quarter belonged to the Hornets and Mr. Ryan Reid. Reid scored three times on runs of 3 yards, 36 yards and 4 yards. The Bobcats’ lone score in the second quarter was Tyler Mays’ 3 yard run. The Bobcats went in at halftime to a 4 point deficit – 22-26.
Not sure what Coach Spitzer said to those Bobcats at halftime but whatever it was worked because the Bobcats defense came out inspired and shutdown the potent Aspermont offense. The Bobcats’ first score of the third quarter came on a 42 yard pass from Moreno to senior classmate, Jerry Shields. Jerry caught the ball in the right flats and simply out ran the Hornets to the end zone! Shields catch wasn’t the only highlight of that third quarter! The Moreno to Shields touchdown did put the Bobcats back into the lead, but possibly the turning point of the game, came on a beautiful, perfectly thrown, 37 yard pass from sophomore quarterback, Ryan Hardin, to the fleet Michael Moreno down the south sideline for a score that put the Bobcats up by 8 points.
The Bobcats and Hornets simply exchanged two touchdowns each in the fourth quarter; however, Nik Martin kicked both extra points for the Bobcats and the Hornets kicked none! Jerry Shields had an outstanding receiving night with another 7 yard pass reception for a touchdown from Tyler Mays. The Bobcat scoring was ended with some really tough rushing yards including a 5 yard touchdown run by Michael Moreno.
Moreno ended the evening with 118 rushing yards on 22 carries for a 5.4 yard per carry average. Tyler Mays had a very similar 5.5 yards per carry average with 71 yards on 13 carries. Passing duties were shared by Moreno, Mays and Hardin with a total of 190 yards amongst them. Jerry Shields caught two touchdowns, Michael Moreno had two receptions and Nathan Wilson had one. Total yards for the evening were slightly in the Bobcats’ favor with 376 yards to 342 for the Hornets.
On the defensive side of the ball our two newest starters really made big contributions! Will Lewis amassed 13 tackles while Moreno and H.R. Shields connected on 7 tackles each! Preston Hobbs and Nathan Wilson had 6 tackles each and Tyler Mays had 4 tackles and 2 BIG fumble recoveries!
It was simply an outstanding, edge-of-your-seat, game between two very evenly matched, hard working teams! And now, the winner gets the privilege of moving forward to the regional playoff game against another very tough, hard-working and well coached team from Strawn! One of the Bobcats’ four losses this season – one of the worst 45 point losses – came at the hands of Coach Lee’s Strawn Greyhounds during week five! There is no doubt that this game will be another terrific challenge for the Newcastle Bobcats and each and every one of them that trot out onto that field will need to be willing to sacrifice and give 120%. It promises to be another great game!
The regional playoff game versus the Strawn Greyhounds will be held this Friday, November 30th, at 7:30 pm in Cisco at the Loboes’ Chesley Field at 300 Front Street, Cisco, Texas 76437.
