Bobcats Win District Championship Over Woodson 52 - 34
Bi-District Game Friday, November 16 at 7:30 in Strawn vs. Sidney Eagles
November 12, 2012
The Bobcats regular season came to an exciting end Friday night with a district championship! The game against the Woodson Cowboys on their home field was about as good as a high school game can get! It was close, hard fought, and back and forth until the very end! The game included outstanding plays on both sides of the ball – offense and defense – and from both teams!
Thankfully, the Bobcats had a little more left in their tank for the fourth quarter than the Cowboys! The Cowboys won several games this season via the 45 point mercy rule which ends the game in the second half when one team is 45 points or more ahead. I’m not sure exactly how many games they even played into the second half due to their potent offense and stiff defense! The Bobcats on the other hand only won three of their nine previous games via the 45 point rule. From the very first day of two-a-day practices Coach Spitzer assured the Bobcats that their schedule was full of some really great six-man teams and that by district play, they would be tested through and through! I believe those tough games paid off big time in the fourth quarter of this district championship game! The Bobcats scored three times in the fourth quarter when players were really feeling fatigued and the pressure of winning!
The Bobcats had 281 yards of rushing offense to the Cowboys 127 and leading the way for the Bobcats were Tyler Mays and Michael Moreno. Mays had 130 yards and Moreno contributed 119 rushing yards. Preston Hobbs came into the game during the third quarter for an injured Moreno and put up an impressive 32 yards on a drive that tied the game with a 5 yard touchdown pass to Jerry Shields from Ryan Hardin.
The Bobcats passing game was rarely necessary but did tack on another 79 yards for a total offensive output of 360 yards to the Cowboys 332. Ryan Hardin has been gaining more and more confidence with his passing skills and completed 2 out of 2 passes for 17 yards. Tyler Mays completed 4 out of 8 passes for 62 yards. Jerry Shields has become the go-to receiver and he had 4 receptions for 67 yards. One of his receptions was a huge fourth down and long reception during the fourth quarter that kept a touchdown drive alive! Michael Moreno also had 2 receptions for 12 yards.
The Bobcat defense was highlighted by a bend but don’t break approach but made some really great stops at very critical times during the game! One of the best was early in the first quarter when the Cowboys were about to score their second touchdown and put the Bobcats in a very deep hole! Woodson quarterback, Brady Hibbits, lofted a pass into the end zone and it was actually in the hands of the Woodson receiver when H.R. Shields perfectly timed his hit and knocked the ball loose before the receiver could gain control and bring the ball down into his arms! That was a great defensive play that snatched the momentum right out from under the Cowpokes and shifted it into the Bobcats favor! The other outstanding defensive play happened in the fourth quarter with the Cowboys desperately trying to regain some momentum when Preston Hobbs intercepted a Brady Hibbitts pass and returned it for a touchdown! The Bobcat defense held the Cowboys on two or three BIG fourth down plays with leading tackler Michael Moreno with 10 tackles. Will Lewis the Bobcats starting safety was next leading tackler with 7 to his credit and Preston Hobbs, Tyler Mays and H.R. Shields tagged on 6 tackles each! Nathan Wilson slammed the Cowboys for 4 tackles and Jerry Shields and Sean Osborn added 1 tackle each.
Tyler Mays did a great job of kicking extra points – 5 out of 7 - into a very stiff wind that had the ball moving all over the field!
The Bobcats head into the bi-district game this Friday with a good head of steam and a district championship under their belt! Their next opponent will be the Sidney Eagles. The game will be played in Strawn and it begins at 7:30 pm. Newcastle has been determined to be the home team. This promises to be another great football game and it will be very important that all Bobcat fans come to Strawn and support the Bobcats with your presence and your voices!
