Crowell Beats Bobcats in Rumble in the Jungle

Score: Crowell 58- Bobcats 26

by Gordon Grubbs

August 30, 2010

At the beginning of each football season Trent High School hosts, The Rumble in the Jungle, a series of six-man football games to kickoff the new season.  This year the final game Saturday was between our Newcastle Bobcats and the Crowell Wildcats.  The Crowell Wildcats had revenge on their mind since last year the Bobcats went to Crowell's homecoming game and came away with a big district upset!  I am sure that defeat has been on the Wildcats' minds all year long!

The Bobcats offense came out very sluggish and turned the ball over with a fumble and a pass interception which were both returned for touchdowns.  The Wildcats had the Bobcats down by three touchdowns (18-0) before Michael Moreno took off on a great run of 60 yards for the first Bobcat touchdown.  From that point the game went back and forth with Crowell scoring and then the Bobcats scoring!  Every time the Bobcats seemed to steal away the momentum, the Wildcats would break a big play!

It was obvious that the Bobcats were in for a tough game by just looking at the size differential of the teams.  Crowell has a very tough division I team that will go far in their district and it was a very good learning experience for some of our younger players.  With the loss of Brandon Bailey at quarterback and Justin Bohannon at running back to injuries, the Bobcats offense is going to depend on a couple of underclassmen to grow up pretty quick.  There were some real positive signs this week that show promise for the Bobcats but it will be a tough row to hoe with all the "D-1" schools scheduled during the first part of the season.

The offensive statistics were led by sophomores, Michael Moreno and Preston Hobbs.  These guys had a total of 189 yards rushing and Michael completed 6 of 10 passes for 61 yards. Taylor Lewis added 38 more yards of passing for a total of 294 yards of total offense.

The defense was headed by seniors Cody Lowe, Dakota Lowe, David Brockman, Jewell Jackson and Paul Martinez.  These seniors totaled 26 of the 36 tackles made and Michael Moreno added 6 tackles.

Not much time for recuperation from a hard hitting game versus Crowell because the Bobcats will take the field at big Shotwell Stadium in Abilene Thursday night against the private school, Abilene Christian Panthers.  Kickoff is at 7:30 pm.  The Bobcats will have their hands full again and are working hard to pick up the pieces and get back on that winning track!  Come support them in Abilene!
