For the first time in several years Newcastle School will be represented in Austin for the University Interscholastic League’s 2010 State Academic and Track Competition! Superintendent, Gordon H. Grubbs said, “This is a tremendous accomplishment for our students and our small school when you consider the strength of the competition at the regional level. When we reach the regional level the UIL includes the larger conference A schools such as Archer City, Albany, and Haskell that have as many students in high school as we do in our entire school! Next spring at the regional level we will be competing with Olney High School.”
Newcastle School students, David Brockman, Nick Libby, Cody Lowe, and Dakota Lowe qualified for this trip to the state competition by winning the regional current issues team competition held at Abilene Christian University. The Newcastle current issues team defeated defending regional champion Tolar High School by a single point to earn the right to advance! David Brockman finished third in the individual standings and Nick Libby finished in sixth place.
There were actually twelve students competing in the regional academic contests. These contestants included Brandon Bailey, Courtney Bailey, Amy Clayborn, J.W. Shields, Shane Potter, Hailey Kramer, Elyse Camp, Courtney Spitzer and the four current issues team members – David Brockman, Nick Libby, Dakota Lowe and Cody Lowe. Sponsors for the UIL academic contestants and teams were Courtney Bozeman, Kem Forbus and Christy Eli.
The Newcastle School representative to the state track meet May 14 and 15 is Miss Courtney Spitzer. Courtney won the district and area 400 meter dash and finished second behind Evant’s Sidney Siepert to qualify for the state meet. Courtney finished the 400 with a time of 60.6 seconds (1:00.6 minute for you track purists) only 1.11 seconds behind Siepert’s winning time of 59.49 seconds. Coach Wilkinson has coached track & field for several years and this will be his first trip to Austin for the state meet. He has refrained from attending until he could take an athlete and this is his and Courtney’s year! Congratulations to Courtney and Coach Wilkinson!
As a matter of fact, we should congratulate all of the Newcastle track and field competitors who made it to regional. Dakota Lowe and Brandon Bailey represented the Bobcats and Courtney Spitzer, Tara Evans, Latisha Short, Kimberly Bell, and Charitye Lowe represented the LadyCats. It was very enjoyable being able to watch our kids compete at such a high level of competition. There is no doubt that folks saw a lot of green Monday and Tuesday and thankfully, Tara Evans is the only participant that we will be losing to graduation. We will sure miss Tara on the sprint and 1600 meter relay teams but those four remaining girls should provide a great foundation for growth of the LadyCat track team for the 2011 season!
