LadyCats Win Area Titles and Advance to Regionals

Brandon Bailey Advances in Hurdles; Dakota Lowe in High Jump

April 20, 2010

The rain came down all afternoon on the area track athletes but our Newcastle track athletes prevailed and made a very good showing to send 7 of them packing for the regional track meet in Abilene. No one left Roby dry this day.

Two Newcastle LadyCat relay teams won the area track meet in Roby and will advance to the regional track meet in Abilene!  The LadyCat sprint relay team led off the track meet with a huge victory in 53.23 seconds.  Team members include Charitye Lowe, Tara Evans, Kimberly Bell, and Courtney Spitzer.  Three of these same girls - Kimberly, Courtney, and Tara - plus Latisha Short won the mile relay to finish the track meet in a time of 4:23.24 minutes.  It will be very interesting to see how they do May 3/4 when they compete in the regional track meet against a higher level of competition!

The LadyCats also had two girls advance in individual events as well.  Courtney Spitzer once again ran her best time in the 400 meter dash with a winning time of 1:00.99.  Courtney has the 2nd best 400 time in the region so her chances of advancing to the state track meet are very good if she continues to improve.  Latisha Short once again qualified for the regional track meet by taking 4th place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:43.37.  Regretfully, only the first two places in regionals advance to the state track meet which means that Latisha will have to work really hard over the next couple of weeks to overcome her area competitors.  It can be done because I've seen it happen before and I believe that Latisha can do it!

Only two Bobcats will be advancing to regionals - Brandon Bailey and Dakota Lowe.  Dakota will be advancing in the high jump with a jump of 5' 8" which was quite a good jump considering the weather!  Can you imagine how hard it would be to jump over that bar while you are soaking wet and trying to compete in a constant drizzle!  Brandon Bailey advances in both boys hurdle races - the 110 and the 300 meter hurdles.  Brandon finished 3rd in the 110's with a time of 16.05 seconds and 4th in the 300's with a time of 43.15 seconds.

All of these athletes will be competing at the regional track meet in Abilene on Monday and Tuesday May 3rd and 4th.  All of them are working hard to advance to the pinnacle in track - the state track meet in Austin!  Come support them if you can!
