LadyCats with their Poolville Tournament trophy!

LadyCats Win Poolville Basketball Tournament!

Back 2 Back Championships!!

by Gordon Grubbs

December 16, 2009

The Newcastle LadyCats laid claim to the championship trophy for the second year in a row at the Poolville Mesquite Pit Basketball Tournament!  The LadyCats played four games in three days to take home the BIG prize and the final championship game was no cake walk!!

The LadyCats played the class 2-A Jacksboro Lady Tigers in the championship game and it was a 44-42 squeaker!  Thank goodness that all of the girls played a really great defensive game and this was the best game yet for Jenna Evans helping out at the point.  Usually Kimberly Bell and Haily Kramer do the honors of moving the ball up court for the LadyCats but  Haily rolled her ankle in the Friday game versus Saint Jo and she did not enter the Jacksboro game until the fourth quarter.  Coach Libby gave Jenna the starting nod and she did a fine job of assisting Kimberly with the tough task of handling the opponents pressure defense.  As a matter of fact, I was impressed with the improved play from Latisha Short during this championship game.  There were crucial times when Latisha would grab a rebound or make a defensive stop that really paid big dividends.  Before the game started I really believe that the Lady Tigers thought our little Newcastle school would be no competition for them.  The LadyCats proved them wrong and took the lead in the fourth quarter and hung on for dear life.  It was a great game full of opportunities for learning and improvement.

The other Poolville game scores for the LadyCats included a 56-25 win over Perrin; 56-41 win over Poolville; and a 43-34 victory over Saint Jo.  Making the all-tournament team for the LadyCats was Tara Evans, Kimberly Bell, and Haily Kramer.  During the skills competition Whitney Norman won the slam dunk competition, Tara Evans won the free throw shooting competition, and Amy Clayborn came in second in the 3 pointer competition.

After the Poolville Tournament Mr. Grubbs visits "Everything Elvis" in Jacksboro!

On the way to Poolville for the tournament Collin Bachman and I were traveling through Jacksboro and had an Elvis Presley sighting!  I had to circle the block to confirm that what I saw was real!!  There in a a bright red, jeweled shirt, pants and cape was a man dressed like Elvis but who actually resembled Roy Orbison, another 50's and 60's singer.  We continued on our way and after the games we stopped back in Jacksboro to eat some delicious barbeque at the Dairyland Drive-In.  While chowing down on some brisket and ribs much to our surprise in walks Elvis!!  What a day!!  The LadyCats won a tournament championship and we had seen Elvis not once but twice!!  In order to celebrate I asked Collin to take my photo in front of the newly opened "Everything Elvis" store in Jacksboro.
