Athletic Contests Can Be Hazardous to Your Health!

LadyCats Beat Perrin 3-1

by Gordon Grubbs

October 14, 2009

I'm not sure how much more excitement my old heart can take!!  Last Friday's football game 42-36 victory over Crowell was stressful enough on this old man, but last night's volleyball game four 30-28 victory just nearly finished me off!  Once again I say, "Wow!  What a game or match!"

There were three things that I have written about the LadyCats this year that were very evident once more during last night's match against the Perrin Lady Pirates.  Number 1:  Our LadyCats are not usually real strong out of the gate.  Last night was no exception.  All four games last night the LadyCats spotted the Lady Pirates at least 2 points before getting on the scoreboard!  Number 2:  Volleyball is a game of momentum and that momentum can swing back and forth, back and forth throughout a match dependent upon many assorted variables!  And finally, number 3:  Our LadyCats are capable of turning it on at the very last second before disaster strikes!

Last night we played very streaky - if that is a word.  We would play three great points and then take a little nap.  We would play four great points and then take a little nap.  Thankfully, somewhere during the middle we would stretch a lead to at least 5-6 points to create a slight comfort zone.  Game one ended with a score of 25-17  in the LadyCats favor, but our serving during game one was very inconsistent and really much less than shiney!

Game two was much the same with the Lady Pirates hanging in there with some very big points, but once again the LadyCats took care of business and won the game 25-17  .  I really can't think of any one highlight during this game.  The LadyCats played okay but were just a little lethargic out there.  I have a feeling that some of our sickness going around may have had an affect on some of our girls.  As Coach Libby put it, "I think our girls' legs are dead."  I totally concur with that opinion because the LadyCats looked tired and unenthusiastic.

The third game was simply a disaster with the LadyCats losing big by a score of 12-25.  The LadyCats got off to that slow start I mentioned; the Lady Pirates took that momentum and worked it for all it was worth.  At one point in the game the Lady Pirates were ahead by a score of 4-15.  What was happening here?  It was a combination of our inconsistent play with a huge dose of inspired play by the Lady Pirates.  I now understand how they played Bryson to a 32-30 game last week.  They were returning everything that the LadyCats put over the net.  It was very disturbing.  At least at the football game Friday night I could provide some vocal support, but serving as a linesman kinda quietens down the cheerleader in me.  It was not fun watching.

Game four was much the same and at one point the Lady Pirates had us right where they wanted us with a 15-21 lead and thinking about game five!  That's when point number three in paragraph one kicked in and the LadyCats decided enough was enough - barely!  The Lady Pirates actually had the lead at 23-24 and were serving for the game when their player hit her serve out of bounds - way out of bounds to tie the score at 24 all!  I breathed a sigh of relief because I thought for sure we could finish this off in two quick points, but the Lady Pirates had a different idea.  The final score of this fourth game was 30-28!  Wow!  What a game!  The LadyCats played hard at just the right times to put one up in the win column and save this old man's heart to breath another day!

I sure hope Saturday's game is as exciting as this one was because we travel to Bryson to take on the undefeated Cowgirls and a share for the district lead!  This one is a big game and I know that the LadyCats will be ready for this one.  Hopefully, all the sickness will be gone and we will be in top notch condition again.  We have the talent and skill to defeat the Cowgirls; it may just depend on that momentum thing again!
