Junior High ELA Classes
In their reading and language arts classes this week, the Newcastle ISD junior high students are busy with some challenging projects! This week, the educational focus has been to teach students how to incorporate writing techniques (found in reading samples) into their own writing. For example, after reading a short story which used compelling imagery and creative transitions, our 6th graders are writing original fairytales, focusing on imagery and transitions in their own writings. The 7th graders read “The Scholarship Jacket” and discussed inferences in a text. They enjoyed finding examples of metaphors and other descriptive language in the story and will include inferences, metaphors, as well as sensory language in their writing assignments. And, the 8th graders are busy writing research papers about the causes, effects, and prevention of bullying. To prepare the students for this writing, Mrs. Nickel asked them to read several articles about bullying. The students then used their Chrome books to do additional research for the project. The students learned how to include lead-in phrases, quotes, and commentary into their paragraphs and how to cite each quote properly using parenthetical citation. At the end of the week, the students will present their revised papers to the class. We have a wonderful group of junior high students who are staying on-task to complete these thought-provoking assignments.
