LadyCats Win Another Close One!

by Gordon Grubbs

October 20, 2011

The Bryson Cowgirls came to Newcastle Tuesday night with an upset in mind but, the LadyCats survived the scare and won the match in five games – 24-26, 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, and 15-7.

Game one appeared that it was going to be another LadyCat breeze as they jumped out on top of the Cowgirls with a 12-3 lead.  The Cowgirls chipped away at that lead and finally took the lead at 14-15 and then stretched their lead to 14-20.  The LadyCats came back and tied the score at 24-24 but two quick points by the Cowgirls put the game in their win column.

The LadyCats played better in game two with Braidi Warren and Courtney Spitzer showing some real power at the net.   That power really intimidates most teams but these young Cowgirls just kept coming back and in game three they got the lead and never gave it up.  The LadyCats just weren’t in sync for most of the first three games and could have easily folded up the tent but they didn’t.  They showed the character necessary for these tough, close games.  They came back with a vengeance with some really good net play from Amy Clayborn and Courtney Bailey.  They had a couple of really nice tips and dinks that put the Cowgirls on their heals.  When you have Braidi and Courtney Spitzer pounding them and then all of a sudden here comes a nice little finesse play from a different angle, it takes its toll on opponents.  The LadyCats dominated game four and the tie breaker, game five.  Jumped out to a lead and never let the Cowgirls get close.  It was a nice win.

Coach Gooch says that he was confident throughout the match and that even when we lost the two games, he was not worried.  He was sure right!  But, I sure hope they don’t wait so late to get started Saturday morning when they travel to Graford for a return match with the Lady Rabbits.  The games Saturday start at 10:00 am in Graford.
