Bobcats and LadyCats Sweep Cowgirls and Indians

Bobcats 58 Vernon Northside 8 ---- LadyCats 3 Woodson 0

by Gordon Grubbs

September 28, 2011

The Newcastle LadyCats and Bobcats were on the prowl this past weekend absolutely demolishing the Woodson Cowgirls and the Vernon Northside Indians.  The LadyCats game with Woodson was the first district contest for both teams and is exactly the kind of start for which Coach Grant Gooch has been preparing.  The Bobcat victory over Vernon Northside was simply a massacre with the varsity Bobcats scoring on each of the seven plays they attempted from the line of scrimmage.

If there was a mercy rule in volleyball, it would have been invoked Saturday as the LadyCats beat the Cowgirls 25-7 and 25-8 in the first two games of the match.  Coach Gooch then gave the junior varsity LadyCats some floor time during the third game and the Cowgirls made it a little closer losing the third game 25-20.  It was a great district start for Coach Gooch and the girls as they prepare for the Perrin Lady Pirates.  Coach Gooch and the LadyCats have been working very hard with an extremely tough non-district schedule (Thanks Coach Libby!) and now is the time for all of that hard work to start paying dividends.  The LadyCats depend on the leadership of five experienced seniors – Braidi Warren, Amy Clayborn, Jenna Evans and the two Courtney’s – Courtney Bailey and Courtney Spitzer – for consistency and focus on the floor.  Junior, Charitye Lowe provides support for the back line while Sophomore, Brianna Camp and Freshman, Jessica Bohannon share time on the front row.

The LadyCats are still on the road this week due to the late arrival of our new bleachers so Tuesday night’s game will be in Perrin (1-0) and Saturday’s game will be in Bryson versus the 1-0 Cowgirls.  Bleachers are set to arrive in Newcastle next Monday, October 3 and should take a couple of days to erect.  So it looks like the LadyCats will be playing all of the first round of district play on the road and the second half at home.   I thought I would never say this but It will be nice to have a home game!

The Bobcat football game at Vernon Northside Friday night was actually over very early in the first quarter.  Every time the Bobcats touched the ball, they scored.  Tyler Mays took the first punt from the Indians back 60 yards for a touchdown.  The first play from scrimmage was a 54 yard touchdown pass from Tyler Mays to Ryan Bohannon; the next play from scrimmage was a 42 yard touchdown run by Michael Moreno; the third play from scrimmage was a 38 yard touchdown pass from Moreno to James Guerin; and as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, Tyler Mays ran back another punt 42 yards for a touchdown.  Score at the end of the first quarter – Newcastle 36 – Vernon Northside 0.

Tyler Mays passes to Wade Spitzer for touchdown at Vernon Northside

The Bobcats first play from scrimmage for the second quarter – you guessed it! – a 38 yard touchdown pass from Mays to Moreno and once again, when the Bobcats got the ball back it was a pass from Mays to Wade Spitzer that ended the varsity Bobcats time on the field.  The Newcastle JV team got some good varsity playing time during the second quarter and actually did a fine job.  Blake Maxwell completed an 11 yard pass to Nathan Wilson and Will Lewis gained 6 yards on two carries.  The Bobcats got the ball back with 3 seconds remaining in the first half and Coach Spitzer decided we’d seen enough and put his starters back in and, as predicted, Michael Moreno scored the decisive touchdown on a 55 yard run making the final score 58-8.  Shot Lowe was the defensive standout with 13 tackles!  Wade Spitzer added 8 tackles and Hagen Bennett had 7 tackles.

Bobcats are off this week and come back Friday, October 7th, with a game at Goldberg versus the Bears!  Homecoming is October 14th with the game against the Bryson Cowboys.
