Varsity Bobcats 56 May Tigers 28; Varsity LadyCats 3-0 Over DeLeon
September 12, 2011
The junior high Bobcats got the weekend off to a great start Thursday with a 32-6 victory over the May Tigers! Friday night the NHS Bobcats finished off the Tigers with a 56-28 beat down that was highlighted by Hagen Bennett’s 128 rushing yards with 2 touchdowns and Michael Moreno’s 219 yards of total offense with 3 touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback, Tyler Mays, is beginning to gain his confidence back in the pocket and threw for 259 yards with a 60% completion rate and 5 touchdowns. Wade Spitzer was on the receiving end of 3 touchdown passes for 156 total yards. On the defensive side the Bobcats were lead by Hagen Bennett and Wade Spitzer with 10 tackles each and James Guerin with 9 tackles. Michael Moreno and Tyler Mays added 6 tackles each and Ryan Bohannon and Shot Lowe contributed 4 tackles each. Jerry Shields had 1 tackle and Brandon Martin had a bone-jarring tackle to end the game! The win moves the Bobcats to 2-1 on the season and gives them a boost as they prepare this week for the Division I ranked Knox City Greyhounds coming to town!
The junior high and high school LadyCats played volleyball all day Saturday with the high school LadyCats taking 3 straight that morning from the DeLeon LadyCats, coached by former Newcastle LadyCat, Amy Crouch. Talk about consistency! The Newcastle LadyCats defeated DeLeon 25-16 in all three games of the match. It was a little weird how that happened and it was a little strange playing the game in our newly renovated gym without bleachers! Fans from both sides brought their lawn chairs and watched and cheered for their teams. The bleachers should be in early October or at least that’s what we’re praying to happen. The LadyCats played an outstanding match with a very well balanced attack coming from all spots on the floor and some outstanding defense from the back row and at the net.
The DeLeon hitters just couldn’t seem to find an answer to the good net play by the LadyCats. I don’t remember one single serve from the LadyCats that was not put into play – none into the net or long. Perfect serving! The LadyCats travel tomorrow, Tuesday, September 13th, to Abilene Christian for junior varsity and varsity matches. District volleyball is right around the corner and begins Saturday, September 24th, in Woodson. The little/junior high LadyCats traveled early Saturday morning to Bryson to play in their annual volleyball tournament. I think they played and beat Petrolia in the first match Saturday morning and ended up the day without a loss and 3 match victories! Looks like the LadyCats are getting ready to re-load in volleyball if these girls keep up the great work they are doing!
