LadyCats Beat Breckenridge for Third Place
August 30, 2010
Newcastle's LadyCats went into the Breckenridge Volleyball Tournament with some pretty stiff competition against some larger 2-A and 3-A teams. Playing against strong competition like this only makes a team better when it gets down to district play. The LadyCats not only gained some good experience but also had a great chance to win the whole tournament!
The very first pool play game Thursday was against the ladies from Bridgeport and our LadyCats handled them pretty easily. Next was the Lady Wildcats from Archer City who have been gaining volleyball momentum over the past three years. The LadyCats beat them in two games! And the third and final pool play game was against a fast growing school north of San Angelo, the Grape Creek Lady Eagles. The LadyCats jumped out to a one game (25-16) lead over the Eagles but lost momentum and ended up losing the match 1-2. That loss placed the LadyCats in the second seat of the "white" bracket for Saturday's final matches.
Saturday morning the LadyCats came out blasting with a quick two game victory over Gorman. It was no contest. But the next game was a rematch against the 2-A Lady Tigers from Jacksboro, whom the LadyCats had just beaten at home in four games. Everything was in place for a Jacksboro upset and that's exactly what happened. The Lady Tigers came out scratching and clawing and built early leads that just couldn't be overcome. The LadyCats were completely outplayed and limped away with their head in their hands. That loss not only took them out of the championship game with Grape Creek, but also put them up against the host team - Lady Bucks from Breckenridge for third place! Who knew which LadyCat team would show up for this game??
It didn't take long for those in attendance to see that the Newcastle LadyCats were now mad cats and were out for blood! The Lady Bucks have a very good team but the LadyCats jumped on them and won the first game 25-19. They didn't let up either. The LadyCats swept the Lady Bucks by taking the second game 25-20 and walking away with the third place trophy! That's two tournaments and two trophies! The LadyCats are working hard to perfect their game and to prepare themselves for what always proves to be a tough district. This week the competition just keeps on coming with our participation in the Jacksboro tournament. I would bet that the LadyCats will get to play the Lady Tigers again at some point this week. It will be very interesting to see this rematch of very good teams! Come out and support our LadyCat volleyball team. They are great, young ladies with a chance to become one of the best volleyball teams that we have seen in awhile!
