Tara Evans Ends NHS Basketball Career as a District MVP

Brandon Bailey, Haily Kramer and Kimberly Bell - 1st Team All District

by Gordon Grubbs

March 22, 2010

All Class-A district basketball teams were announced recently and the Newcastle girls and boys were very well represented!  At the top of the list was senior Tara Evans who was named the district's Defensive MVP.  Tara has been a very integral part of the LadyCats success in all UIL athletic events.  Her strong work ethic, strength of character, and her intense desire to do her best, have paid dividends for the LadyCats ever since Tara was in the 7th grade.

The LadyCats will definitely miss Tara next year but moving up to their senior years will be first team all-district players, Haily Kramer and Kimberly Bell for the LadyCats and Brandon Bailey for the Bobcats.  These three juniors have been team leaders and significant contributors to the Newcastle athletic success.  All three were named to all-district teams for their fall sports as well.

Kimberly is the spark that gets the LadyCats going on the offensive end of the court.  Her ball handling, passing, and decision-making skills have improved every single year since her freshman year and there is no doubt that there is not a better point guard in our district and possibly the area. Haily is the LadyCats top scorer.  Every good team needs a forward like Haily who is never afraid to take a big shot in a tight situation! As the basketball season progressed Haily gained confidence and would take the ball into the paint!  These two girls make a great one-two punch for the LadyCats.

Brandon Bailey was selected first team all-district for the Bobcats and was definitely the Bobcats MVP for the season.  Brandon was consistently the high scorer for the Bobcats and when opponents decided to put on a press, Brandon was right in the middle of insuring that the ball moved up-court.  His presence on the court was imperative for Bobcat success.

The district's second team all-district selections included junior, Latisha Short, and sophomore, Courtney Baily, for the LadyCats and senior, Nic Libby, for the Bobcats.  These first year starters earned lots of good court time this year and Coach Libby depended a great deal on each of them to contribute to their team success.

Senior, Cody Coop, was the only honorable mention all-district selection for the Bobcats.  Cody has been an important leader for the Bobcats for several years and it was great to see him recognized for his contributions.  He will be missed next season.

LadyCat fans should be aware that Tara Evans will be representing Newcastle High School this weekend at the 21st Annual Mineral Wells Area Chamber of Commerce-Chicken Express All-Star Basketball Classic!  The game will begin at 6:30 pm Saturday, March 27th, in the Mineral Wells High School Gym.  These games give deserving high school seniors an opportunity to perform in front of many college coaches from across Texas.  You are encouraged to come support Tara as she represents our school and the LadyCats team!
