LadyCats Win Two More Over Holidays!

Bobcats Lose District Opener in Lipan

by Gordon Grubbs

January 05, 2010

The Newcastle LadyCats continued their winning ways by defeating the Henrietta Lady Cats in a non-district game on New Year's Eve and then won their third straight district game at Lipan.

The LadyCats 2009 finale was a great game with the LadyCats and Henrietta battling back and forth throughout the first three quarters with the visitors taking a small lead 44-39 into the fourth quarter.  With only 8 seconds left in the game, the LadyCats took a 51-49 lead and saved the victory!  Leading scorers were Kimberly Bell with 16 and Tara Evans with 12.

Last year the girls from Lipan had their way with the LadyCats sweeping both district games.  At the end of the first quarter it appeared that they expected a repeat by jumping into a 12-6 lead over our Newcastle LadyCats!  I think the holidays are still taking their toll on the LadyCats and they sometimes find themselves stuck in neutral!  A great shooting percentage has never been a strength of the LadyCats but due to their tenacious "D" and full court pressure they get a lot of shots and usually score a lot of points.  The LadyCats went into the locker room at half with a 4 point defecit.  And by the end of the third quarter we had pulled even at 33 points each.  Kimberly Bell and Haily Kramer were the leading scorers with 16 points each but the LadyCat who kept us in the game this night was Latisha Short who added an unexpected 9 points!  Latisha's role as an inside force doesn't provide her a lot of scoring opportunities but on this night she was fearless and very timely with her contributions.  As often happens the LadyCats wore down the Lipan ladies and the fourth quarter was ours!  Our ladies scored 22 points in the 4th quarter alone to Lipan's 8 points!  Quite a turn around!

The Bobcats were not nearly as fortunate with Lipan!  This was our first district game and Lipan is a very formidable opponent on the court since they play basketball year-round!  Lipan jumped out to a 22-8 lead in the first quarter and never quit coming!  Their post player had 15 of his 28 points total in the first quarter!  I must remind our readers that the Bobcats got off to a slow start last year as well and ended up being the surprise of the district by making the playoffs.  The Bobcats have athletic abilities and hopefully they will be able to translate those abilities from the football field to the basketball court!  If they can do that, they will be winning games at the end of district play!

The LadyCats and Bobcats are at home Tuesday night, January 5th, for games with the Lingleville Cardinals and go on the road Friday for a two big games with Strawn!  Supposedly the girls from Strawn were not going to be as strong this year due to graduation losses, BUT, this past week they beat a tough Gordon team by a score of 72-46.  Both of these games will have district playoff significance.  Come out and support the LadyCats and Bobcats!
