LadyCats Nab First District Win for 2009-10

Bobcats Fall to Midway

by Gordon Grubbs

December 16, 2009

The Newcastle Bobcats and LadyCats were at home Tuesday night but each had different opponents.  Girls basketball always gets started a couple weeks earlier than the boys season and therefore, the girls and boys district schedule is a little out of whack at the beginning and end.  The LadyCats played their first district game with Bryson and the Bobcats played the Midway Falcons in a tough but much improved game.

The LadyCats kept up their winning ways by destroying the Bryson Cowgirls by a score of 80-16! The LadyCats jumped on the Cowgirls from the opening tip-off and consistently increased their lead each and every quarter.  It could have been a lot worse than it was because there were times when the LadyCats missed 4 or 5 shots right under the basket!  It's funny how those things work because the LadyCats would miss those shots from 1-2 feet from the basket and then hit a beautiful 3 pointer from beyond the arc!  You just never know about our shooting!

Speaking of shooting.....the score book indicates that nearly everyone got into the act with 80 points.  There was a time during the game that I truly thought we might bust triple digits!!  Here is the way that the scoring breaks down:

Tara Evans 8 0 2 6 16
Amy Clayborn 2 0 5 0 7
Latisha Short 0 2 0 2 4
Hailey Kramer 0 2 6 2 10
Jenna Evans 2 0 0 2 4
Kimberly Bell 6 2 5 0 13
Courtney Bailey 2 4 0 6 12
Courtney Spitzer 0 4 0 0 4
Whitney Norman 2 0 0 0 2
Darcey Lewelling 4 2 2 0 8

The LadyCats continue on their journey towards a district championship Friday night December 18th at Huckabay.  Game time is 6:30 pm.

You might not know it by looking at the final score - 82-55 - but the Bobcats played a really good game against the Midway Falcons last night.  The score at the end of the third quarter was 51 - 47 and the Bobcats were fighting hard to gain a lead.  But, the old inconsistency bug hit and within a short period of time Midway had scored 31 points in the 4th quarter alone!  Most of those points coming on turnovers.  If you look at the Bobcats record you won't see many wins but from my basketball perspective I am seeing improvement in several areas that will pay dividends when it comes time for district play to begin.  Scoring for the Bobcats went like this:

Nik Libby 2 4 3 0 9
Casey Terrell 5 0 2 0 7
Michael Moreno 0 0 2 0 2
Brandon Bailey 5 0 7 2 14
Wade Spitzer 3 8 2 6 19
Cody Coop 2 0 0 0 2
Paul Martinez 0 2 0 0 2

The Bobcats will be playing at Slidell this Friday, December 18th and the game begins at 8:00 pm or immediately following the Slidell girls game.  Next home game for the Bobcats and LadyCats will be Tuesday, December 29th at 6:30 pm.
