LadyCats Start BBall Season with a Win
November 11, 2009
Well, it's roundball time again in the country - LadyCat country - that is and the LadyCats got off to a strong start Tuesday night with a 64-43 victory over the Midway Lady Falcons. As one would expect for the first game of the season, there were quite a few mistakes on the part of both teams during the first half - turnovers, missed shots, and so many fouls! Thankfully, it got better as the game progressed and the LadyCats improved each quarter - the Lady Falcons did not. The scoring breakdown by quarter looked something like this:
| LadyCats | 13 | 12 | 18 | 21 | 64 |
| Lady Falcons | 12 | 9 | 13 | 9 | 43 |
Kimberly Bell got the LadyCats going during the first quarter with 7 points and some tenacious, ball-hawking defense. The LadyCats forced several turnovers with their press during the first quarter; however, they could not convert the turnovers into points. The floor was very cold during the first two quarters. Haily Kramer took over the scoring during the second quarter with two big three-pointers when K-Bob went to the bench in early foul trouble. It was easy to tell that this was the first game and first half of real competition for both teams.
The second half was much better for the LadyCats! Not sure what Libby told them but many of the turnovers disappeared and the fouls came under a little more control AND the big contributor was Courtney Bailey's 12 straight points from the field! She was on fire! The final quarter scoring was pretty much spread out with Tara, Whitney, LaTisha, and Kimberly, contributing 2 to 4 points each, but the scoring leaders were Amy Clayborn and Haily with 5 points each. Quite a few of these points came from the foul line with Tara and Latrisha putting in 2 out of 2 free throws and Haily was 3 out of 4 free throws. I won't say how the other fourth quarter free throw shooter for the LadyCats did because I know Coach Libby will have her shooting about 100 per day for the next several days! Those free throws will be the difference between winning and losing our truly important games at the end of the season and our girls and boys must be able to confidently go to that line and put them in!
After watching the LadyCats last night I can tell you one thing for sure - their games will be fast paced, exciting and they will leave everything out there on the court! Coach Libby has the tremendous benefit of being able to substitute several girls in and out of the game without losing a whole lot of talent. They showed great promise up and down the bench! There is no doubt that this team of girls has the ability to go a long way as long as they can maintain their focus and self-control on the court. I should also add that we missed Darcey Lewelling last night and when she gets over her current illness, she will add another dimension inside the paint that will provide a lot of support for the team.
The LadyCats next game will be Friday night at Graford at 6:00 pm. The boys get tipped off next Tuesday night against the Archer City Wildcats but the girls game at Archer City is in jeopardy due to the Lady Wildcats volleyball playoff run. Also be aware that the junior high game Monday night might have to be changed to a home game due to a gym situation at WF Christ Academy.
