LadyCats Win One and Lose One!

Maintain 2nd Place in District!

by Gordon Grubbs

October 21, 2009

The Newcastle LadyCats maintained their grasp on 2nd place in the district race with a Saturday loss to the Bryson Cowgirls and a Tuesday win over the Poolville Lady Monarchs.  The Cowgirls have clinched the district championship and with last nights victory over Poolville, the LadyCats will be the district's 2nd place team.

I missed the Bryson match but I understand it was a very tight one with the LadyCats going back and forth with the Cowgirls.  The first game went to the Cowgirls in a 20-25 victory but there were times when the LadyCats looked like they might take the game.  The LadyCats couldn't quite get their game in motion during game two and lost 17-25.  Game three was a different story and it appeared that the LadyCats might put themselves back in the match.  The LadyCats led this set throughout the first half of play and at different points had a 4 point lead. (13-9 & 15-11)  The Cowgirls tied the set at 17-17 and tried to grab the momentum but the LadyCats came back and went ahead 18-17.  But, when the Cowgirls took the lead at 18-19 they never looked back and ended the game and the match at 22-25.

Haily Junebug pops a pass to the front row!

Tuesday night's game versus the Poolville Lady Monarchs was a crucial one for the LadyCats because if they win this game, they clinch 2nd place and a ticket to the playoffs!  It was also Randi Bohannon's 18th birthday!  The LadyCats came out a little tenuous in the first game and immediately fell behind 2-5.  They caught up at 8-8 and then took control of game one with a 25-17 victory.  Game two was the LadyCat let down!  I'm not sure what happened but it seemed that the LadyCats would get one point and the Lady Monarchs would get three or four points; the LadyCats would get one point and the Lady Monarchs would get three or four more points.  It was a very frustrating game with Poolville taking it 18-25!  The LadyCats came back strong in game three and grabbed a 4-0 lead and quickly added to it with a 15-4 lead.  Buuuuuuuutttttttttt!  Guess what happened?  The Lady Monarchs clicked off seven that is correct - 7 - straight points and it looked like a totally different team!  From a 17-7 lead to a 17-14 narrow margin and a big loss of MOMENTUM!  Thankfully, the Lady Monarchs also went a little brain dead during the final moments and the LadyCats roared to a 25-16 victory!  This game was highlighted by some really nice kills by Darcey Lewelling, Haily Kramer, and Tara Evans!  Even Kimberly Bell got a chance for a kill when the Lady Monarchs set the ball to her at the net.  Nice job girls!  I want to say that Amy Clayborn came into this game and did a great job of filling in for Courtney Spitzer.  Game four was another close one but Haily Kramer and Tara Evans were beginning to feel the power and hit several kills that rocked the gym.  They killed some that made you say, "Wow!"  I think they were tired of this match and decided to get it over with!  During this game Latisha Short came in and kept the ball in play on several occasions!  Whitney Norman did the same in game two with a couple of blocks and a couple of strong hits.  It's nice for Coach Libby to have some depth that can be used when the need arises!  When the playoffs hit that depth is sometimes a difference maker.

The LadyCats play the winless Woodson Cowgirls this Saturday morning and it will be the final volleyball home game for three girls - Tara Evans, Randi Bohannon and Whitney Norman.  Come out and support the LadyCats and give these seniors a round of applause.
