Bobcats begin the Throckmorton game with enthusiasm!

Bobcats Play Hard & Together Against Throckmorton!

Bobcats - 36 Throckmorton - 83

by Gordon Grubbs

October 20, 2008

I know it sounds crazy when you hear someone say that this was one of the Bobcats' best games of the year considering they were defeated 83-36 in the third quarter.  But, that's exactly how this observer saw things Friday night.  Having watched them the entire season I felt the Bobcats played a great game!  They played hard and they played together as a team to the very end.  There were several times when they could have rolled over and quit when the Greyhounds' tough offensive attack took it's toll on the Bobcats' defense, but they didn't.  The Bobcats just kept coming back and coming back.  Throckmorton thought that they had 45'd the Bobcats with only 27 seconds remaining in the first half when they went ahead 77-28, but that just didn't set well with the Bobcats and with only 2 seconds left in the half the Bobcats scored one last time to force the continuance of the game into the second half.

Brandon Bailey takes a big hit near the Newcastle sideline.

This game for the Bobcats was quite different than some of the more recent games.  The first 6 games of the 2008-09 season have been highlighted by the two-man ground game of Travis Bell and Brandon Kimbro.  But, this game only produced 60 yards (41 yards from Pecos Bohannon) on the ground for the Bobcats.  This night the Bobcat offense was highlighted by the passing of Pecos Bohannon, Arturo Moreno, and Brandon Bailey and the receiving of Jacob Crouch, Travis Bell, Pecos Bohannon, Arturo Moreno and Brandon Bailey.  Coach Sptizer pulled out all the stops and used several different combinations of passers and receivers.  Brandon Bailey had 13 completions out of 20 attempts for a 65% completion percentage and four touchdowns - probably his best passing night of the season.  Jacob Crouch also had one of his best games of the season catching 4 passes for a total of 117 yards and one touchdown.  A couple of his catches were just amazing.

Defensively the Bobcats had a real tough time stopping the Greyhounds' vaunted offense.  As a matter of fact, the Bobcats didn't stop the Greyhounds during the first half of the game.  Jacob Crouch led all tacklers with six; Justin Utley added four and Travis Bell ended the night with three tackles.  Arturo Moreno, Paul Martinez, Brandon Kimbro, Brandon Bailey and Pecos Bohannon contributed two tackles each.  The Greyhounds took the second half kickoff and believed that they would finish off the Bobcats during their first possession, but the Bobcats defense came out of the locker room for the second half with different plans.  The Bobcats defense stopped the Greyhounds on four plays; took possession of the ball and immediately drove the ball down the field for what appeared to be a momentum changing touchdown.  Regretfully, the Bobcats fumbled the ball just inside the one or two yard line and the momentum switched back to the 'Hounds.

There was no reason for the Bobcats to hang their heads after this effort!  It's sometimes hard to feel good about a defeat but I know that the Bobcats played hard and walked off that field knowing that they had given this game everything they had.  Bobcat fans were proud of the effort and their willingness to keep going against great odds!  That effort and attitude will pay dividends at some time in the very near future.

Mr. Grubbs gets excited when the Bobcats score with 2 seconds left in the first half!

The Bobcats next game does not get any easier.  This Friday, October 24th, the Bobcats host a very tough, big Vernon Northside Indians' team.  We would sure love to see the Indians upset by our Bobcats!  Come to the game this Friday and support our Bobcats!
