Newcastle elementary students have an additional fine arts/intervention period this year. Students have a three-day rotation between music with Mrs. Deaton, Spanish with Mrs. Kincy, and computers with Mrs. Story, Mrs. Spitzer, and Ms. Qualls. Any student identified as being in need of intervention to close the learning gap in reading or math attends specials every other day and on the alternate day attends intervention class with a teacher for intense, small-group instruction. You may have seen Mrs. Deaton’s wonderful elementary Christmas music program, “Elfis.” I know Mrs. Forbus is excited to see some of these talented younger students on the horizon for future OAP’ers. You may be surprised to hear your elementary student’s response if you quiz them on colors; you’ll have to specify whether you want responses in English or Spanish. They can count in Spanish, too.
